Commander Kevin Bernstein is a native of Deer Park, New York. He received his Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine from Penn State University in 2005, his Master of Medical Science from Drexel University in 2007 and his Doctor of Medicine from Drexel University College of Medicine in 2011 on a Health Professions Scholarship.
He commissioned to Lieutenant in 2011 and completed Family Medicine residency while serving as Chief Resident at Naval Hospital Pensacola, Florida in 2014. Its 2013 Junior Officer of the Year, he authored the overall winning submission for the Department of Defense Patient Safety Award alongside the Directorate for Healthcare Business for improving patient safety within Medical Home Port.
As Family Medicine physician, Fleet Surgical Team SEVEN, Okinawa, Japan from 2014-2016, he deployed aboard amphibious platforms in support of amphibious and expeditionary exercises in 7TH FLEET. He obtained his Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification aboard USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6), led the implementation of a robust resiliency program promoted by Commander, Task Force 76 and served as Senior Medical Officer aboard USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19).
In 2017, Commander Bernstein completed Sports Medicine fellowship at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, a member of the University of California-San Diego and San Diego State Sports Medicine Consortium. He served as a team physician for Carlsbad High School Football and Palomar College.
After fellowship, he reported to Naval Branch Health Clinic Mayport, Florida as its Senior Medical Officer and Musculoskeletal Department Head, serving as Faculty Sports Medicine Physician supporting an advanced musculoskeletal curriculum for the Navy’s largest Family Medicine Residency Program at Naval Hospital Jacksonville. He completed implementation of the Musculoskeletal Integrated Practice Unit Value-Based Care Program and served as Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, managing a pharmacy budget of over $35 million. He fostered partnerships within the Jacksonville Market between University of Florida, St. Vincent’s and Mayo Clinic departments to enhance training of residents while assisting the Officer in Charge with business management of over 11K enrolled beneficiaries.
Commander Bernstein is board-certified in Family and Sports Medicine. He is currently Director for Public Health and Warfighter Optimization for Naval Health Clinic Annapolis, responsible for health of the public and readiness for 16k beneficiaries supporting 64 units as well as the Brigade of Midshipmen. He is Team Physician for the United States Naval Academy football and women’s lacrosse teams, and Faculty for fellows, residents, and medical students in the National Capital Region. He chairs the Navy Bureau of Medicine Neuromusculoskeletal Human Performance Subcommunity, developing programming to enhance readiness within various operational communities throughout the Navy and Marine Corps. In this role, he developed and implemented the Human Performance Specialist additional qualification designation for Navy Medicine.
He is President for the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians and previously served on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), representing over 120,000 Family Medicine Physicians and Medical Student Members. He served as AAFP Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) as well as New Physician Delegate to AAFP, testifying on behalf of all physicians in the United States to develop policy for advocacy efforts by the AAFP and AMA. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He has presented and published chapters, articles, and research nationally. His military decorations include a Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, an Armed Forces Service Medal, a Humanitarian Service Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
